{"id":3096,"date":"2009-03-27T14:26:15","date_gmt":"2009-03-27T18:26:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/2009\/03\/art-as-instinct\/"},"modified":"2009-03-27T14:26:15","modified_gmt":"2009-03-27T18:26:15","slug":"art-as-instinct","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/2009\/03\/art-as-instinct\/","title":{"rendered":"Art As Instinct?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">I&#39;ve been reading Denis Dutton&#39;s book: &quot;The Art Instinct: Beauty, Pleasure and Human Evolution&quot; and have found that it&#39;s not as convincing as I&#39;d hoped it would be. &#0160;Having the good fortune to photograph in an area that was frequented in the mid to late 1800&#39;s by artists of the Hudson Valley School, I was hoping that Dutton would help explain why some of my images are almost an exact match to scenes painted by these artists 150 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">I&#39;ve posted a painting done by Sanford Gifford in 1864 and some photographs of mine taken from the same spot he must have sketched from.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"tpad-img\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/6a01156f6c1fc1970b01156e74c3eb970c-800wi\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Gunks001\" class=\"at-xid-6a01156f6c1fc1970b01156e74c3eb970c \" src=\"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6a01156f6c1fc1970b01156e74c3eb970c-500wi.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"tpad-img\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/6a01156f6c1fc1970b01156e74c775970c-800wi\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"040 Autumn Copes View\" class=\"at-xid-6a01156f6c1fc1970b01156e74c775970c \" src=\"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6a01156f6c1fc1970b01156e74c775970c-500wi.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"tpad-img\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/6a01156f6c1fc1970b01156e74c94a970c-800wi\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"049\" class=\"at-xid-6a01156f6c1fc1970b01156e74c94a970c \" src=\"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6a01156f6c1fc1970b01156e74c94a970c-500wi.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"tpad-img\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/6a01156f6c1fc1970b01156e766cb5970c-800wi\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"128\" class=\"at-xid-6a01156f6c1fc1970b01156e766cb5970c\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6a01156f6c1fc1970b01156e766cb5970c-500wi.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">What is it that makes a landscape compelling across generations? &#0160;One would think that cultural influence alone would not be a sufficient explanation, since the culture of post-Civil War America \u2013 when these paintings were done \u2013 seems very different from today&#39;s culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">I began to think that perhaps we are &quot;wired&quot; in a particular way so that certain landscapes could strike a chord in a very diverse population of viewers.
