{"id":3061,"date":"2011-02-05T16:59:28","date_gmt":"2011-02-05T21:59:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/2011\/02\/distillation\/"},"modified":"2011-02-05T16:59:28","modified_gmt":"2011-02-05T21:59:28","slug":"distillation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/2011\/02\/distillation\/","title":{"rendered":"Distillation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I am teaching workshops, I emphasize the importance of the frame, and of using the edges and corners that appear in the viewfinder to help compose the final image.<\/p>\n<p>I&#39;ve been out skiing a few mornings a week and have been alternating between cameras &#8212; carrying either my panoramic camera or a standard format digital camera &#8212; which present very different viewfinders in which to compose an image.<\/p>\n<p>Going back and forth between the cameras as I&#39;ve been doing really brings home how much the viewfinder, and the discipline it imposes, affects the images I come back with.<\/p>\n<p>Curiously, I find the exaggerated horizontal view of the panorama format easier to work with.&#0160; Rather than finding the more restricted frame a challenge, it actually allows me to distill the scene more easily into what is important.<\/p>\n<p>It&#39;s this challenging process of identifying and then isolating a particular portion of the world &#8212; distilling the scene&#39;s fundamental essence &#8212; that is at the heart of creative landscape photography.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tpad-img-center\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/6a01156f6c1fc1970b0147e255827c970b-800wi\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"328\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01156f6c1fc1970b0147e255827c970b\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6a01156f6c1fc1970b0147e255827c970b-500wi.jpg\" title=\"328\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I am teaching workshops, I emphasize the importance of the frame, and of using the edges and corners that appear in the viewfinder to help compose the final image.
