{"id":3001,"date":"2012-04-06T23:43:50","date_gmt":"2012-04-07T03:43:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/2012\/04\/making-sense\/"},"modified":"2012-04-06T23:43:50","modified_gmt":"2012-04-07T03:43:50","slug":"making-sense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/2012\/04\/making-sense\/","title":{"rendered":"Making Sense"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently spoke to a photography club and, in preparation, was reviewing some materials I&#39;ve collected over the years that disucuss different aspects of the medium.&#0160; I planned to talk about what makes a photograph work and wanted to draw an important distinction between the photograph as a document and the photograph as artistic expression.<\/p>\n<p>In a back issue of <em>Aperture<\/em> magazine (#186) I found an interview with photographer Stephen Shore who, I think, summed it up perfectly:<\/p>\n<p><em>Some regard the photograph as a finger pointing at content and not a creative expression in itself.&#0160; That&#39;s the distinction between a photograph and an illustration.&#0160; I guess what it comes down to is: an illustration is aiming the camera at the direction of some content, while the photograph is making sense of it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><br \/><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"tpad-img-center\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/6a01156f6c1fc1970b016764be9748970b-800wi\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"433\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a01156f6c1fc1970b016764be9748970b\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6a01156f6c1fc1970b016764be9748970b-500wi.jpg\" title=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently spoke to a photography club and, in preparation, was reviewing some materials I&#39;ve collected over the years that disucuss different aspects of the medium.&#0160; I planned to talk about what makes a photograph work and wanted to draw an important distinction between the photograph as a document and the photograph as artistic expression.
