{"id":2972,"date":"2012-11-29T20:50:18","date_gmt":"2012-11-30T01:50:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/2012\/11\/on-being-not-dead\/"},"modified":"2012-11-29T20:50:18","modified_gmt":"2012-11-30T01:50:18","slug":"on-being-not-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mohonkimages.com\/journal\/2012\/11\/on-being-not-dead\/","title":{"rendered":"On Being Not Dead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Came across a thoughtful Op-Ed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/11\/22\/opinion\/on-being-not-dead.html\" target=\"_self\">piece<\/a> in the NY TIMES by Bill Hayes a short time ago that echoes one of the themes of this blog: pay attention.&#0160; It contrasts being dead &#8212; you either are or you aren&#39;t &#8212; with being alive, which is more nuanced:<\/p>\n<p><em>After all, there are many ways to die \u2014 peacefully, violently, suddenly, slowly, happily, unhappily, too soon. But to be dead \u2014 one either is or isn\u2019t.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The same cannot be said of aliveness, of which there are countless degrees. One can be alive but half-asleep or half-noticing as the years fly, no matter how fully oxygenated the blood and brain or how steadily the heart beats. Fortunately, this is a reversible condition.
